James Last & His Orchestra The Best Of Romantic Classics

James Last is a German big band leader with a large fan base in Europe, although he has never had a comparable following in the United States. Last's trademark is arranging pop hits in a big-band style; his series of "party albums" is equally well-known. Over the course of his career, he has sold well over 50 million albums.

Last learned how to play piano as child, switching to bass as a teenager. He joined Hans-Gunther Oesterreich's Radio Bremen Dance Orchestra in 1946, when he was 17 years old. In 1948, he became the leader of the Becker-Last Ensemble, which performed for seven years. During that time, he was voted as the best bassist in the country by a German jazz poll for three consecutive years, from 1950-1952. After the disbandment of the Becker-Last Ensemble, he became the in-house arranger for Polydor Records, as well as for a number of European radio stations. For the next decade, he helped arrange hits for artists like Helmut Zacharias and Caterina Valente.

Last released his first album, Non-Stop Dancing, in 1965. The record of brief renditions of popular songs, all tied together by an insistent dance beat and joyous crowd noises. It was a hit and helped make him a major European star. Over the next four decades, Last has released over 190 records, including several more volumes of Non-Stop Dancing. On these records, he varies his formula by adding different songs from different countries and genres, as well as guest performers like Richard Clayderman and Astrud Gilberto.

Though his concerts and albums were consistently successful -- especially in England, where he had 52 hit albums between 1967-1986, which made him second to Elvis Presley in terms of number of charting records -- he only had one hit single with "The Seduction," the theme from American Gigolo (1980). ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

This installment in David and Diane Arkenstone's Adventure Cargo series travels to the plains of Africa for inspiration. Inspiration is an important word. African Skies only uses the continent as a guide, accentuating the typical contemporary instrumental palette of surging synths and vaguely ethnic electronic percussion with African vocalists and minor nods to indigenous instrumentation. This approach posits the four pieces here somewhere between the Arkenstones' usual name-brand output and soundtrack music for the next globe-hopping Tomb Raider film. Produced and performed by Diane and David Arkenstone, the music of Adventure Cargo transports you to the land of Africa, beginning with African Skies. Throughout the album, you hear instruments such as marimbas, kalimbas, drums, flutes, and tribal voices. These beautiful musical instruments weaved and intertwined together to paint a rich portrait of the beautiful African landscapes. And while the music is wonderful, the album covers are also very attractive. The CD is packaged as a digipac with tri-fold covers. Inside, you will find some beautiful illustrated objects relating to Africa and a well-written descriptive note by Diane Arkenstone. These, along with the music, make this CD, a well-rounded album. And this great adventurous album is not one to be missed!

There are only 5 tracks on the CD, with 4 of the 5 are between 12-15 minutes in length. Each track is uniquely beautiful and exotic. There are some vocals, and they blend in very nicely with the enchanting music. I have always been fascinated by the Egyptian culture and artifacts. The CD covers of this album feature some very beautiful artworks of various Egyptian artifacts, and a lovely written passage by Diane Arkenstone.

Kuschelrock, Vol. 2 isn't as musically coherent as some of the later volumes in the series, as it mixes pop hits from two distinctly different musical eras -- the '70s and the '80s -- but it still functions as a handy way to obtain loads of popular singles in one two-disc swoop. EXPLORING THE DEPTHS WITH ORIENTAL BLUES

Abaji is one of the large discoveries of the best-seller “Desert Blues 2/Rêve D' oasis”. The “Troubadour of the Beduinen” (Le Figaro), born in Beirut, comes of to a musician family with large tradition and fascinating cultural roots: Armenian, Lebanese, Turkish, Greek, Syrian blood mixes in its veins. For this journey in the Orient - exclusively for network brought in - Abaji went on the traces of its origins. John Williams - Spanish Guitar Music

'The guitar is a genuinely Spanish instrument,' writes Uwe Kraemer, and it (along with the classical music for it) is one of the great gifts of Spanish culture to the world. The period of composition for guitar in Spanish culture began in the 1500s, and has never really faded. Guitarist John Williams (not to be confused with the composer of the Star Wars themes) is a master of this instrument, and has selected a repertoire of pieces spanning all four centuries of the instrument.

This is a solo album - all of the pieces here are arranged for single guitar. Some of the music is distinctively Spanish, while others bear a Catalan and Portuguese influence. Few of the composers on this album are well-known names in the Northern-European culture, but in the Latin culture, these are names that are known, and the music even more so.

From the earliest century of guitar music, composers such as Gaspar Sanz and Alonso Mudarra show the origins of this kind of work, which includes dissonances that occasionally sound like modern composition. There are pieces with lively spirit and power, inspiring dance in a more popular mode.

Mateo Albeniz has only one surviving composition; a church organist in the late eighteenth/early nineteenth century, he was influenced by Scarlatti and wrote for the harpischord - Williams has transcribed the piece for guitar here.

From the nineteenth to early twentieth centuries, many composers were productive: Isaac Albeniz, Julio Sagreras, Manuel de Falla, Enrique Granados, Francisco Tarrega, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and Joaquin Turina. Some like de Falla were very influenced by traditional Spanish stories and musical themes, whereas others like Granados drew inspiration from the broader aspects of European musical tradition. Villa-Lobos shows the transportation of Spanish music into the new world, becoming a noted name in Brazilian music (which, ironically, is the only major South American country without Spanish as its primary language).

Joaquin Rodrigo and Frederico Moreno Torroba represent composers in this grand style up to the present day.

John Williams' playing is technically sound and has flashes of emotional power and inspiration. Many pieces here are wonderful, but 'The Miller's Dance', the 'Fandango' and the Villa-Lobos 'Prelude No. 4 in E minor' stand out as the greatest of tracks here, being nothing short of brilliant.
